Hard-Boiled (Paperback)

The American pulp magazines of the 1920s that published hard-boiled detective fiction transformed the genre, relocating the center of mystery publishing from Britain to the American cities. This study, drawn from advertisements, the memoirs of authors and publishers, and Depression-era readership trends, explores the emergence of this genre that made celebrities of Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, and others.
